Seagulls

 

Seagulls are quiet birds, considered quite beneficial by agriculturists (they were credited with saving farmer's crops by consuming the insects endagering them). They are usually gentle creatures, exhibiting neither antagonism to not fondness for man.

What interested Tom Wilson Weinberg about the seagulls was their behaviour or more precisely the behaviour of some seagulls :  in response to a UC Irvine study of long term monogamous lesbian behaviour in seagulls on Santa Barbara Island, Tom Wilson Weinberg wrote and composed "Lesbian Seagull" originally recorded and released it on his own 1979 album, The Gay Name Game.  

Mike Judge, creator-designer of Beavis and Butt-Head, heard the song in a David Letterman "Dave's Record Collection" segment and contacted Weinberg about using it in the film. The song was originally featured in the animated comedy film “Beavis and Butt-Head Do America,” and it quickly became a cult classic. Performed by Engelbert Humperdinck, the song explores themes of acceptance and finding beauty in unconventional places.

“Lesbian Seagull” holds a special place in the hearts of many members of the LGBTQ+ community and is often seen as an empowering anthem that promotes love, acceptance, and self-expression. 

Note : today LGBTQ+ is supplanted by the more inclusive LGBTTQQIAAP (I'm not joking). I'm expecting some additional letters in a near future (Z, for instance -  I'm joking).

Another unsuspecting seagull has been previously seen as vector of educational and social values, when Hall Bartlett directed in 1973 Jonathan Livingston Seagull, a Paramount Pictures directed by Hall Bartlett who gives us "twelve great lessons". , a movie rightfully listed in the book "The 50 Worst Movies of All Time", by Harry Medved and quoting some critics. Here is just an example :

No, I have not read the book but,  oh my God, did I ever see the movie ! Seagulls, as the film stresses, subsist on garbage, and, I guess, you are what you eat... As if this were not nauseating enough to itself, Neil Diamond composed and sings an ear-splitting and stomach-turning score, its platitudes and decibels running abreast and amuck .

Johnny Garmon and the Shadows issued three singles for Garmon's own Missile label, which is listed at Rockin' Country Style unlocated. 

Billy Miller and Miriam Linna of Norton Records have included three of their sides in their "El Paso Rock" volume 4..  Therefore, as I trust the always reliable Billy and Miriam, we can say that the Missile label was located in El Paso, Texas.

One of a couple of singles released by Cuppy (a label with connections to Bill Haley's ex-wife, whose nickname was Cuppy) that were produced by John (a.k.a. Johnny) Grande, who was Bill Haley's piano player in the Comets in the 1950s and early 1960s. Interestingly, in the late 50s the Comets, moonlighting as "The Lifeguards" recorded a tune called "Everybody Out'a the Pool" that is very similar in some respects to the one here (though the melody is different; the main similarity is somebody calling "everybody out of the pool!" every so often!)   

"Everybody Out'a the Pool" written by Frank Pingatore and recorded by The Lifeguards saw three releases (backed by "Teenage Tango") on Casa Blanca, ABC-Paramount and DR.

This record is listed by Rockin' Country Style but gives no indication as to it's address. The information regarding this small label is so contradictory—apart from the address —that I had to find out a bit more; something I admit I enjoy doing most of the time in cases like this.  While there is unanimity regarding the address (Philadelphia) which is incorrect, that is far from the case of the owners' names.  According to R&B indies it was owned by Bill Haley, Cuppy Haley, Tony Messina and Sonny Cassella. Jointly owned by Sonny Casella and Tony Messin, according to Discogs. Etc.

This is the first record of a series of 8 recordings (last issued in 1967) produced by Mark Hendrix who operated the United Artists Theater in Long Beach, California. All following records were either by his son Marlow Hendrix (also using the pseudonym Marlow Stewart) or by The Monacles of which he was the guitarist. 

The United Artists Theater was operated by the father of budding surf rock guitar star Marlow Hendrix, who performed as Marlow Stewart.  Marlow’s dad would publicize his son’s guitar prowess with stage shows and buy-a-record-get-free-admission deals (or vice versa) and book other stage shows, like the Elvis impersonator show of which Dick Dale took first prize.  14-year-old Marlow also had his own interview show on KNAC-FM, which was located in Lakewood Village.  http://longbeachhistory.wordpress.com/2010/08/21/long-beach-movie-theater-goings-on/

Date is probably 1962 as Geno Lanzi introduced his record , " Countdown 4-3-2-1 , " from the stage of the United Artists theatre , adressing his record off the press to Col. John Glenn at Cape Canaveral for his teenage daughter. [Mercury-Atlas 6 was the first crewed American orbital spaceflight, which took place on February 20, 1962. Piloted by astronaut John Glenn]

Singer from Long Island, New York. In 1955 she was a winner on the Arthur Godfrey "Talent Scouts" television show. As a result she was signed to the Rama label in New York and, shortly afterward, to the Capitol label before recording for the Hilton label in 1957. Record re-issued by Verve Records on the West Coast. See her discography at 45cat.

Location is given by "The American Record Label Directory and Dating Guide, 1940-1959" by Galen Gart at 510 Madison Avenue, NYC.

Real name : Peter J. Veneziano,  He was born Sept. 8, 1932, in Clarksburg, W.Va. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1951-1955. A recording artist, disc jockey and radio and television personality known all over Ohio, he sang and appeared on TV on American Bandstand and won a TV Emmy award and appeared in several motion pictures filmed in Ohio including, "Welcome to Collinwood," "Brubaker," "8 Men Out" and "Rainman."

He had been employed as a school teacher, coach and wrestling official in the Springfield area for 21 years. He was Wooster High School wrestling coach from 1967-1970. Inducted into the South-West Ohio Wrestling Hall of Fame. Peter Veneziano also ran a wrestling camp for 15 years in Delaware.

Died in 2005 in Ohio.

Eddie Quinteros: 

I think I was 13 or 14 when I joined the musician union at 14. I got busted playing a union house at 14 and after that I had to join, they were very powerful in those days! About 1956 I had another little group - we did a TV stint in San Francisco on KPIX...  after I joined the union there was a singer bamed Bobby Freeman, and his manager saw me and wanted to know if I wanted to play guitar with them. He just had his song out "Do you Wanna Dance?"  They were going to tour in Hawaii and they needed a guitar player who could read music and I auditioned and got the job at 15.     

I was getting a solo spot playing the dances and stuff and eventually we went down to LA and we cut some songs and that was a hit record I had "Come Dance With Me".  So the manager went to New York, he knew Bobby Shad, from Time/Brent/Shad Records. They gave me a contract and released the record. On the East Coast it hit really big, top ten; on The West Coast, it was just under the top 40, That station KYA was playing it - in those days the DJs were Tom Donahue and Bob Mitchell.     

When that record came out I was touring back there with Alan Freed on the Easter tour. That was a series of one nighters, they filled the bus up with all the performers. You would perform that night, drive all night to next venue - it was grueling. That's kind of I started. I was on Dick Clark's show four times, including the Saturday Night Beechnut show. The bad part I wasn't getting royalties - my father checked into it. I was 17 at the time. What he found out was that Dick Clark sent us a letter saying the payments (for appearing on the show) had been made but the checks were endorsed and cashed by my manager who didn’t have power of  attorney. The record company - all of your expenses to promote and record came out of royalties. Studio time, all expenses... We lived quite well, very well, but found there was nothing left.     

After that experience I was pretty bummed about it.  With nothing for your future but one nighters. I decided to go back to school,

Upon returning home to Dale City in California, Eddie launched his own label, Ed-Dar Records, with his manager.  "Come On, Little Girl / Waited For You" were issued on Ed-Dar 102 in September or October 1960.

Soon, the songs had a second issue on M & K Records. While who was M isn't known for sure, but K was Bob Krasnow, who ran the King Records branch office in San Francisco from 1958 to 1964.  It doesn't seems obvious, but the M & K release is the same label as MK 101 issued in October 1960. See Winkly and Nutty (two KYA DJ's : Jim Stag and Bob Mitchell).

As noted by an anonymous keen follower of my blog the Volume 18 is the only one still missing to complete the series of Women Of Music. Planned a few months ago, I kept putting off its publication mainly because of the mediocrity of the performances—except, perhaps, the one by Riley Reid, despite the risqué lyrics.

So, here it is today, a special release because all the singers have something in common (and it’s not their vocal talent, but rather their on-camera performances). That is why I named this volume Deep Gold Throats.

Mando and the Chili Peppers have perhaps inspired more fantasy and fancy than anyone else in the hallowed halls where the Mystic Knights of the Mau-Mau dream up their doings. They've topped the wish list from day one; their shrine is bowed to daily in the Knights' Hall Of Fame; toasts are often seen raised to the glory of their sole long player, 1957's On The Road With Rock 'n' Roll. So the very idea that they're going to be playing the 2005 Ponderosa Stomp is at once unbelievable and at the same time just as it should be. If you're wondering what all the fuss is about, take into account that Mando and the Chili Peppers are no ordinary band. In fact, at times their very existence has seemed almost too good to be true. The aural evidence suggests a group of swamp pop fanatics (who also have a particular affinity for jazz, country and western and Little Richard) raised in a border town barrio recording at Cosimo's studio in New Orleans' quite possibly with a few Crescent City cats sitting in on the session. And where did they disappear to after churning out that one great long player of the ages? Rumors that some of the band moved to Chicago and worked with Eddy Clearwater seemed at once too good to be true and yet…well, but of course!!

Led by one Armando Almendarez, nee Mando, the Chili Peppers originally came to life as San Antonio Alegre before changing their name to the slicker Mando and the Latineers. Texas guitarist Randy Garibay recalled the band's glorious beginnings for an article in the San Antonio Express News: "I'd go to these house parties with my brother and this guy Armando Almendarez and San Antonio Alegre would be playing. They'd do the standard polkas and boleros and then, all of a sudden, with Mando playing accordion, they'd break into 'Lucille' or 'Just Because' by Lloyd Price. It was amazing. That's when I first heard rock 'n' roll."

Inspired by Little Richard, Fats Domino, Gatemouth Brown and Clifton Chenier, when Mando began wielding his accordion for San Antonio's Rio Records in the mid-fifties, he blazed through breakneck renditions of Chenier's "Boppin' The Rock" and Chuck Berry's "Maybelline" alongside the usual crudely-recorded conjutos that the label specialized in. When Mando swapped his squeezebox for an electric bass and boyhood pal Jesse "Chucho" Perales traded his bajo sexto for an electric guitar, the Latineers were born.

By 1956 they had their own TV show on San Antonio's KCOR entitled "Rock 'n' Roll"(!!) and were the proud owners of a black Packard limousine which took them to engagements in Vegas and Denver, where Golden Crest Records boss man Clark Galehouse staggered upon one of their red hot stage performances in the middle of a snow storm. If the liner notes to On The Road With Rock 'n' Roll are to be believed, Galehouse, a Long Island plastics manufacturer who dabbled in big band recordings, was only in Denver due to the blizzard that had grounded his plane en route to a music convention in Idaho. Galehouse changed their name to the Chili Peppers and released their first single, a swampy, Fats Domino-esque treatment of the 1939 standard "South Of The Border" backed with the bayou-meets-barrio rocker "Don't Say Goodnight."

The results were magical. The band's insistent, triplet-infused back beat coupled with Mando's lilting, laid-back Tex-Mex vocalizing made "South Of The Border" the absolutely definitive rendition of an already great song, and it became a hit along the Gulf Coast, particularly in New Orleans. They followed it up was the frantic mambo-charged "I Love To Eat Chili in Chile," which sounded like Perez Prado cutting loose with a Crescent City R&B band. It's flip side, a Mando-ized version of George Morgan's country classic "Candy Kisses," pointed the way to the future: When On The Road With Rock 'n' Roll hit the racks (complete with an in genius cover photo of the band parked on the side of the highway strapping a bevy of Fender amps and guitars to the roof of their Packard!), "San Antonio Rose," "I'm Walkin' The Floor Over You" and "There's A New Moon Over My Shoulder" stood proudly alongside originals like "Why Can It Be," "Swingin' Baby" and "This Is True Love." There were also stripped-down, rocked- up pop numbers like "Someday (You'll Want Me To Want You)," "Beg Your Pardon" and "Harbor Lights," Marvin and Johnny's slow burning Pachuco anthem "Cherry Pie" and, perhaps most tellingly, a crazed, balls-to-the-wall take of Guitar Gable's "Congo Mombo."

On The Road With Rock 'n' Roll was a bold step for Galehouse, as LPs were a rare commodity for rock 'n' roll bands in 1957 (two years later, he'd roll out the red carpet for Tacoma, Washington's similarly rocking Fabulous Wailers, whose stunning debut LP was unleashed in 1959), but the album stands as one of the best ever, genres be damned. Not long after its release, the Chili Peppers drifted into rock 'n' roll's bottomless underground.
